What is the intel equivalent of a ATOM N455? The reason I am asking is that I have an application that runs fine on my Intel E8400 with 4GB RAM and I want to know if this application will work on a ATOM N455 with 1GB RAM. I can install Win XP on the Atom PC since this machine is a touch screen and is used specifically for this application.

Unfortunately this machine is "on order" and therefore the supplier does not have one in stock for me to test the application on.

OK. Didn't know that. But how does it compare to a E8400?

You have a 3.0 dual core versus a 1.6 single core multi threaded cpu.

And an atom cpu is used for its very low consumption, its less powerful than a dual core.. but it should work well (depending on what app of course)

And if its a touchscreen with an Atom, Windows 7 not XP.. but you would be uncomfortable as 1GB is a bit short.

As far as I know, Intel produced the Atom CPU to fit it in smaller machines such as Netbooks and Tablets. Their main aim was to be used for everyday computing, although you can have development machines running on such an architecture. It is smaller and less powerful, thus you can place it in smaller devices, and since it is less powerful it consumes less power (more battery life and less heat).

So in short, I doubt that you will find an ATOM CPU which can yield similar processing power a dual core CPU. At most, you can increase your RAM, that usually helps, but other than that, you do not really have a ton of options.

This machine is meant to run an application I am writing myself. It won't need a lot of fancy touch gestures, just simple clicking of huge buttons. However, I will be running another application that uses a webcam to read QR Codes on the fly, and that application is quite processor intensive since it is constantly analysing what the camera is seeing to look for QR Codes.

Atom is on-par with a Pentium 4 processor in terms of processing power, check this benchmark chart for an idea of the difference between the E8400 and the 330 (which is acually the dual core version of the N455, so you can basically divide the socres by two):

Thanks, guys!

The alternate setup, with a regular PC with a 15" touch screen is an i5-2400 with 2GB RAM and is only €22 more expensive so I think I will suggest the latter setup. The other one was cooler since it had no fans and solid state drives. But if something went wrong it meant changing all the machine.
