Considering the rate at which new article were being written, some articles were spending so much time in the spotlight that they were getting burned. Take your Guildwars article for example. It was sitting there at the top for almost a month before another article was posted. It does not exactly give the impression of dynamic web site, does it? Note that I am not complaining about the article - it was a good one, but an article every forthnight is not good. I know everyone is busy so that's why the "share article" feature was added.
The whole idea of the articles sharing feature is to compensate for the lack of willingness by members to write articles. Note that you cannot just share an article at will. The mechanics of the feature are made in such a way that it limits the amount of shared articles in a given time while it also gives priority to active members. By active I mean members who earn more points in a span of 7 days. This is a new thing though and the limits can be adjusted and fine tuned to the point where we are neither inundated with trivial news nor lacking from fresh news.

Putting it that way it does make sense, articles here aren't like pastizzi
Since the Shared Articles are just links to other websites can there be like a "Like" button and a comment section for them. Maybe floating DIV like the one you use for the notification.
Imagine cliking the "Comment" button would pop this floating DIV up with the comments and a like button.
This way there will be a bit of interactivity with the shared articles and not just links to other websites.
