Garry Newman Talks With Lanthrax In A World Exclusive Interview.

When I first downloaded Garry's mod v. 9, I could honestly say I was a bit confused and found it a bit difficult to navigate through all the options and tools that it gives you. However, once I got the hang of it, I'd have to say that I had a good laugh putting Half Life 2's characters on sofas or flinging them 200 meters away. I also saw some hilarious clips of Counterstrike Source that were inspired by Garry's mod (although not necessarily using it), this one being my personal favorite. It would seem that many others felt the same way: Garry's Mod became an instant hit with the gaming community, even getting the attention of Valve Software, the brains behind the Half Life series, Counterstrike Source, and the Steam software delivery system.

Starting off as a bedroom developer, Garry ended up working with Valve to develop Garry's Mod v. 10, which you can buy from Steam for just $10. His mod success is one of many in the gaming world, however very few mods can claim the popularity and fan base that Garry's can.

Everybody sits down and watches their favourite TV show - South Park.
"You are feeling sleepy! sleepy...! sleepy...!" The G-Man works on his hypnosis techniques.
Jumping from an airplane is usually a bad idea without a parachute. Don’t forget that.
"Brush your teeth.. if you want to look as sexy as me"
Unhappy HL2 characters go on a rampage
The HL2 500 meter sprint... looks like the geeky Dr. Kleiner won

However, this is not to say that this has gotten to Garry's head. I had contacted him on Tuesday afternoon regarding the possibility of an interview, and he replied within a few hours. I was very surprised to say the least, I would never have thought that a reply would come so quick!

Anyway, thats all the talking from me for now. You can hear it from Mr. Newman. Most of this was copy and pasted from my hotmail account if you guys noticed so bear with me here.

[S.E.A.L.] Well first of Garry, thanks alot for agreeing to this interview, it's really great that a mod developer such as yourself takes the time for questions
from the gaming community.

[Garry] Ha ha I'm not Bill Gates. I'm just a gamer like you guys.

[S.E.A.L.] Well, Bill Gates was unavailable, tried his secretary though lol. Just kidding. Anyway, I guess the first question would be: how did you really get the idea for developing "Garry's Mod"?

[Garry] I never really had the idea to develop GMod into what it is now. We'd
all been playing JBmod which was a simple mod that enabled the physgun
and let you weld s*** together. It wasn't really being developed quick
enough for me.. and I really wanted to mess around with ropes. So I
had a mess around with the SDK and got ropes working (badly - I had no
idea what I was doing). Then I added something else, then something
else.. and it eventually got to where it is now!

[S.E.A.L.] When you were building the mod so to speak, what were a few of the
problems you encountered?

[Garry] Lack of knowledge was probably the biggest problem. I didn't know how
stuff worked or what the right way to do stuff was. I learned a lot of
c++ from programming GMod.

[S.E.A.L.] The popularity of the mod must have surprised you a bit, what was your reaction to its popularity?

[Garry] It's great. It's never really seemed as popular as people make it out
to be (until I get the bandwidth bill for the forums) - but yeah, it's
great.

I guess I'm more bemused by the popularity than anything. Like if I
was trying to make a popular mod I would have probably made something
like CS with an RTS theme or something. It kind of sucks that I made a
popular mod on accident.

[S.E.A.L.] What projects would like to work on in the future?

[Garry] I really have no idea. That's one of the things I'm trying to work out
now. It's hard because I know whatever I try to do people are gonna be
like `G mod was better suck a d***'.

[S.E.A.L.] Valve were impressed by your work, how did they contact you regarding "Garry's Mod" and what was your reaction?

[Garry] I was in contact with Valve a lot during the development of GMod - I
think most people making mods are. I was kind of dubious at first when
we were discussing it. But in the end I was like f*** it.. what else
am I gonna do.

[S.E.A.L.] Besides being a mod developer, what other games are you into?

[Garry] Right now I'm playing BF2142 a bit. It's probably the only game I'm
playing right now apart from GMod. I like the persistence of BF2142.
It's a multiplayer game but it's like you can `beat' it by ranking up
and unlocking everything - so it keeps you coming back because it
feels like you aren't wasting your time.. when in reality you're
spending hours just incrementing a number on some server somewhere.

[S.E.A.L.] Have you ever yourself had any funny "Garry's Mod" moments? You know, like any funny pictures or building anything that just made you laugh?

[Garry] Sure. It wouldn't have got anywhere if it didn't make me laugh. Pretty
much everytime I play online I get a laugh out of something. Usually
dumb stuff like writing 'c****' on the wall.

Here's the last video that made me laugh

[S.E.A.L.] What have you been up to lately?

[Garry] Getting up late. Eating too much. Not exercising. Pretty much all the
same stuff I've done for the last 2 years :(

[S.E.A.L.] Sounds like my life pretty much then. Any consoles you'd consider getting?

[Garry] I'll probably get a Wii eventually. It's something different and I
like that. I'll probably get an XBox360 when I have more room too.. I
wanna look into Live! and try to get a game on it.

I'll probably get a PS3 in 5 years when there's some good games out
and it's under £200.

[S.E.A.L.] I feel your pain on that one. So we all know about Garry Newman, the "Garry's Mod" developer. Anybody else helping you out at the moment?

[Garry] Yeah - there's a few guys. http://www.garrysmod.com/team/

[S.E.A.L.] Some people may not believe the authenticity of this interview, Garry, any way you could prove that I'm not making this all up?

[Garry] Huh. Not unless you want me to scan my driving license in.

[S.E.A.L.] Maybe next time Garry. Any final comments?

[Garry] Thanks for the interview! I like that your questions didn't suck :)

It was nice to meet you too Garry lol. Thanks for giving your time to us gamers here at LANThrax, Garry! Good luck with your work in the future!

Well, there you go. Garry wants a Wii. Its official. Let the Wii hunt begin! Lol. Till next time gamers, I'm outta here, tomorrow's my birthday and I'm gonna party like its 1999! Thanks to Stephen Heaslip, editor of Bluesnews.com for putting a link to this article, thanks to Garry Newman for taking the time for the interview, and thanks to Bejzinator, S.T.K._Tony (also for fixing my possessed mouse) and Osprey for keeping their silence regarding the subject of the interview.

I'm gonna go party now, there's no time to waste.

S.E.A.L. out.

BIX I am not a person who really gives a witches A** about his life count when playing games such as UT and COD. I have to admit I enjoy being fragged but fragging is much better
