Lost Planet: Extreme Condition - Review

Game Cover
This game is one of the first DirecX 10 titles to be with us on the PC. This game is actually an Xbox 360 Conversion that Capcom had put lots of effort in to convert it.

The Story

There are Humans who try to conquer the world of E.D.N III. When they were settling in this new world they encountered it's original inhabitants, The Akrid. The Akrids are the creatures that inhabited this planet before humans tried to get it. They attacked humans as they are taking their land. The story starts with the main character that goes by the name of Wayne Holden. It starts with you and a group of "soldiers" trying to escape the attack of some akrids. After sometime you then come to a place where the biggest Akrid comes in called the "Green Eye". You try to escape this akrid together with the others. Then you come to some vehicles called VS where you get to pilot one. Then the green eye comes in again and starts attacking in which after a while a cutscene comes in and this akrid kills your father. Then Wayne who has escaped from this horrible incident ends up in the the snow. Then he is found by a band of Snow Pirates which got left behind in the evacuation. He could only remember the Green Eye which killed his father and nothing else. After a while being with these people you have assigned your first mission. I'm going to stop here or I'll spoil the fun of the game .

Graphics

As you know this game is DirectX 10 capable so I though I'd give it a shot. After playing for a while in DirectX 10 I switched to DirectX 9 to see the difference. There is not a lot of difference and it's a bit hard to spot. The differences that I could see are the lighting, motion blur, the water and the shadows.
It's graphics are overall amazing and they are very nice. It has a lot of cool visual effect which bring the game a lot to life, like motion blur, massive explosions, and the weather. You can see more in the pictures.

DirectX 9
DirectX 10
I leave it for you to compare.

Sounds

The sounds are pretty good. The sound effects and music put you in the atmosphere of the game especially when hearing a massive explosion.

Gameplay

Since it's an Xbox title converted for the PC the gameplay is sometimes not so good. First of all, this is a 3rd person shooter although  you can switch views to 1st person but it's not so comfortable  in my opinion.  Also there seems to be a bit of a delay when moving the mouse. AI settings depend on the difficulty settings you make it but still it ain't so advanced. Sometimes the opposition just shoots and doesn't move, or if it moves it does that slowly making it easy for you.

Weapons

This game offers some variety of guns, starting from a normal machine gun to a nice and huge Gatling gun. What weapons to use varies from what your fighting up against with. If you're fighting in close range it's either the machine gun or the shotgun and in long range you could find a good use for the rifle. There are also the Vital Suits (VS) which carry these big Gatling guns or a large shotgun. You can remove a gun from it and use it on foot and you can attach a gun for more firepower if it's needed.

Overall

Overall the game is nice and it's a fun and enjoyable experience although it has some things that does not make it so comfortable to play. So if I was to rate it it will go something like this.

Graphics: 9.3/10
Sounds: 8.2/10
